A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF THEATRE IN EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN INDIAN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: PRACTICES, CHALLENGES, AND INNOVATIONS

Abstract

Within the context of development communication, this research examines the role that theatre plays. When it comes to fostering the growth of development procedure, theatre is a technique that is both very effective and very responsive. First, it discusses the history of theatre in both the international and Indian contexts, and then it moves on to discuss the origins and characteristics of development communication from the perspective of the third world. Following that, the study makes an effort to advocate for the connection between theatre and development by utilizing the analysis of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal. Theatrical performances in India served as a tool against political exploitation during the time of British rule. Theatre continues to be relevant after independence because of the participatory and adaptable nature of the art form. Additionally, the anti-fascist theatrical movement and leftist philosophy in theatre are major topics of discussion in this article. A number of topics are emphasized in Indian theatre, including but not limited to: agriculture, literacy campaigns, social harmony, girl trafficking, child labor, gender discrimination, religious tolerance, women's empowerment, prevention of HIV-AIDS, family planning, pulse polio, nutrition, and environmental pollution, among others. Each of the three case studies of Nazariya, Kolkata Creative Art Performer, and Ashokenagar Natyamukh provides a comprehensive overview of the manner in which theatre carries out the dissemination of developmental ideas in various regions of India. The conclusion of this study is that theatre plays an important and effective role in the resolution of conflicts, the identification of cultural identities, the formation of communities, social control, social protest, and the dissemination of public consciousness regarding various social concerns to citizens at the grassroots level.
