Abstract

In order to ascertain the sources of students' perceived affective filters in an ESL classroom, the study grouped senior high school students in one of the public schools in the northern Philippines according to the program they were enrolled in and their self-perceived English-speaking performance level during the 2023–2024 academic year. The triangulation method, which includes questionnaires, interviews, and observation, was employed by the researchers to gather data. The majority of students in all strands believe they speak English at an intermediate level, according to the study's findings. Eight criteria on the psychological barriers that can impede language learning, known as the affective filter's sources were found: (a) naturally silent and shy, (b) fear to commit error, (c) lack of skills to speak English, (d) difficulty of the task, (e) intimidation from classmates, (f) fear to be laughed at, (g) intimidation form teachers and (h) bad experience in speaking.
